Conservation of hand fans at home
Hand fans can be preserved open or closed. It’s important to know the pros and cons of each option to achieve the longest possible duration of them.

In the situation of keeping the fan open, one of the most recommended options is doing it in a frame (which must be manufactured with acid free materials). Some hand fan curators leave a very small hole between the lining and the frame to let air pass, others just seal the frame hermetically. The wisest advice is to take into account the materials that have been used to create the hand fan. Some kinds of cloth need “fresh air” to be kept in perfect conditions, for instance, this is the situation of silk a material that if kept in an hermetic frame can be disintegrated much sooner.

Another way to keep the fans opened is exhibiting them in stand created for this purpose. Made in different materials, wood, plastic, metal… they don’t offer any kind of protection. The hand fan is exposed to any kind of possible aggressions such as humidity, insects, dust, dirt… We suggest if this is the way of preservation chosen by you, to keep the out of direct sunlight, excessive humidity and high of low temperatures.

If the chosen option is to preserve the hand fan closed, it’s very important to fold it very carefully, avoiding the use of adhesive bands or rubber bands. Adhesive bands can damage the decoration or paint and can leave glue remains, rubber bands with time can be glued to the hand fan. A very good idea is to wrap it on non acid paper and keep it in a not excessively humid or dry place. Putting it in a drawer it’s an usual option, if you do it and must protect it against insects don’t use mothproof, it can give off gas that may be harmful to your hand fan. An alternative is using a small bag of shaving cedar. As a last advice, at least once a year, take the fan outside its wrap to air it and evaluate its conservation status.
